Incidental Vocabulary Learning From Bilingual Subtitled Viewing: An Eye‐Tracking Study

This study examined the effectiveness of bilingual subtitles relative to captions, subtitles, and no for incidental vocabulary learning. Learners’ processing novel words in its relationship learning gains were also explored. While their eye movements recorded, 112 intermediate advanced Chinese learners English watched a documentary one 4 conditions: L1 subtitles. Vocabulary pretests posttests assessed participants’ knowledge target form recognition, meaning recall, recognition. Results suggested an advantage over captions recognition recall. Bilingual less effective than Participants group spent more time reading translations items words. The amount attention (but not translations) predicted gains.
